The bond between siblings is truly unique, and Maverick Oyao’s story proves just that.
When his sister, Lu Asey Keanna, found out about her school’s Junior-Senior Prom, she was filled with excitement.
But there was a catch: attendees were required to wear a ball gown, a luxury Asey feared her parents couldn’t afford.
Drawing from his artistic flair, he decided to craft a ball gown for her.
Not just any gown, but one that would rival those from high-end designer shops.
The best part? He designed it from scratch, pouring his heart and soul into every stitch.
With a tight budget of Php 3,000 (approximately $62), Maverick embarked on his mission.
He scoured textile stores, gathering all the materials he’d need.
His muse? The iconic Filipino fashion designer, Michael Cinco.
Maverick recalls,
“I browsed on YouTube and Google on different types of ball dresses, especially Michael Cinco’s Spring and Summer Collection, and started conceptualizing.”
The creation process was meticulous.
Maverick began by designing patterns and cutting fabric for the skirt.
He adorned it with crisscross patterns using white satin ribbon, enhancing its beauty with plastic flowers, clear crystal beads, and sequins.
Even at its halfway point, the dress’s potential was evident.
Maverick’s dedication didn’t stop there.
He hand-painted the corset in an ombré blue, ensuring it complemented the dress’s overall color scheme.
But he wasn’t done.
Drawing inspiration from Michael Cinco’s design
The final product was nothing short of breathtaking.
Asey looked like royalty in her winter-themed ball gown.
The duo made quite the impression at the prom, with Asey and her escort turning heads and capturing hearts.
Even Michael Cinco, the renowned designer who inspired the gown, was taken aback by Maverick’s talent.
But for Maverick, the gown was more than just a piece of clothing.
It was a symbol of his unwavering support and love for his sister.
“I’ve done my part very well as your supportive kuya (big brother), and I won’t get tired of supporting you. That’s my promise. I hope I made you happy this Valentine’s Day.”
While Asey might have hoped to win ‘Best Dress’ at her prom, Maverick believed she was already a winner.
In his eyes, the dress was special not because he crafted it, but because his beloved sister wore it.
Today, Maverick continues to channel his creativity, taking on design and styling projects.
He even conducts photoshoot sessions, showcasing his latest works on his Facebook Page.
Through it all, his love for his family, especially Asey, remains his driving force.
