The hit song “Angel” by Sarah McLachlan is easy to recognize. The song was released in 1997 and was part of her sophomore album titled ‘Resurfacing’. The song is often referred to as “(In) The Arms of an Angel”. Now, a new cover version by sisters Lucy and Martha from Wigan, Lancashire is being lauded across the world. This rendition from July 2020 is worth a watch.
The song has a solemn melody and was written after Sarah lost her close friend, Smashing Pumpkins keyboardist Jonathan Melvoin, reports ABC News. He passed on after an overdose and it was a big loss for Sarah. Since it was released, it has been covered many times by various artists.
The song, thanks to its solemnity and content, is commonly used in mourning and is played often at memorial services and funerals. When people lose a loved one, they tend to wonder where they went, and if they are okay or even happy. In the song, Sarah brings comfort to her friend Jonathan and believes that he is safe and well taken care of.
Now, Lucy and Martha, two sisters, have done a cover version of the tune and, somehow, made it feel a little less solemn and sad. It is important to note that Lucy Thomas is only 16 years old. In 2018, she went all the way to the semifinals on “The Voice Kids UK.” She has released two albums since 2018, with her songs and videos being readily available on her YouTube channel.
Lucy states on her website that she was immediately offered a recording deal by Cavendish Records after her appearance on the show. This is what led to her impatiently awaited debut album premiere that was released on the 1st of February in 2019. From there, Lucy’s following has grown significantly, especially after she gave us her second album Encore in April 2020.
She did her cover of Sarah’s “Angel” hit, which she uploaded in July 2020. In a few weeks, her cover already has 760,000 views and continues to attract more fans. She has done the cover with her 10-year-old sister Martha. This is the second song the two vocalists have done together. The duo did the cover so well, it really sounds new and very authentic. Lucy Thomas says that the two plan on recording and working together more in the future.
When the cover went viral, even those that had never heard of her and her music made an effort to get to her YouTube channel and listen to more of her gorgeous voice. Bearing in mind that the song “Angel” is usually played in sad moments, Lucy’s cover gives a more comforting and almost peaceful feeling.
It is undeniable that Lucy Thomas is very talented and has great potential as a singer. At her young age, she has already managed to capture the hearts and attention of many and she is definitely destined to do more.
